Wolverhampton Steel Logistics Centre

In November 2017, DB Cargo UK began developing a dedicated steel logistics centre in Wolverhampton — part of a £6 million investment in the future of UK metals transport. By late 2018, the facility was fully operational and has since become a vital hub within the supply chains of leading steel producers, including ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel, and SSAB.

Steel is imported from major UK ports such as Immingham, Boston, Liverpool, and Newport  with the flexibility to serve additional locations including Teesport, Goole, and others. From there, DB Cargo UK operates rail services to the Wolverhampton terminal, where materials are stored securely and distributed just-in-time to customer sites.

The site includes two high-specification covered warehouses:

  • New facility (6,500 m²) – capacity for 1700 steel coils
  • Original warehouse (5,000 m²) – capacity for 1400 steel coils
  • Outdoor plots – for handling scrap, billets, slabs and other steel products
  • Annual throughput capacity: approximately 950,000 tonnes

Fully rail connected, the Wolverhampton centre can receive up to five trains per day, each carrying up to 1300 tonnes of steel.

This enables a high volume, rapid turnaround solution for manufacturers serving downstream markets such as automotive, domestic appliances, heating systems, and food packaging across the UK.
