Our history

Headquartered in Doncaster, England, DB Cargo UK is a wholly owned subsidiary of the German Deutsche Bahn AG. Prior to 2009, the company was known as English, Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS).

Here’s a brief history of the company:

EWS was formed in 1996 from assets of the former British Rail freight business. The company was initially owned by a consortium led by US regional railroad Wisconsin Central Transportation Corporation (WCTC), with financial partners Fay Richwhite & Co from New Zealand, Berkshire Partners from the USA and Goldman Sachs from the UK.

In October 2001, WCTC was acquired by Canadian National (CN), which acquired WCTC’s 42% shareholding in EWS.

In 2006, Euro Cargo Rail was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of EWS to operate open-access freight services in mainland Europe.

In June 2007, Deutsche Bahn AG acquired all shares in EWS.

In June 2009, EWS was renamed DB Schenker Rail UK.

In March 2016, the company was renamed DB Cargo UK.
