Why DB Cargo UK?

We let our people do the talking…

Who better to explain the benefits of training and building a career with DB Cargo UK than our own people? Here’s what a few of them have to say about working with us…

Walter Cartwright, Area Production Manager

Walter started his career at Thornaby, progressing to Riding Inspector, Breakdown and Recovery Supervisor, and then Engineering Production Manager, to his current position of Area Production Manager. Walter won freight personality of the year in 2013 at the Global Freight Awards. He says:

“The key to my success is down to the workforce, communications and engagement which drives the success of any company. Winning freight personality of the year was down to the hard work of the guys who make you do what you do – I get my drive and motivation from my manager.”

Stelios Perseidis (EuroTRAIL Graduate Trainee)

“EuroTRAIL offers everything a young professional or a fresh graduate would look for at the start of their career. Challenging projects in different business fields from day one, international experience through various placements across European subsidiaries, continuous support from the euroTRAIL training team and trainees’ developed network, knowledge and professional improvement.”

Kate Turner (Rail Solutions Manager)

Kate was interviewed for an apprenticeship on her eighteenth birthday. As an apprentice she gained experience in a wide range of departments, and was seconded to a major role supporting the new driver training project at Toton. It was a pivotal learning experience for the new recruit, helping her build her confidence, her network of contacts and her project planning and management expertise. Kate tells us what happened next:

“I finished my apprenticeship in September 2013, and received a full-time role in the Long-Term Planning Department as a Strategic Planner. Even though my scheme was finished I wanted to continue to progress within the company. Within two years of starting as an apprentice I became a Rail Solutions Manager. What next? Well I want to progress even further in my career, which may lead me into other parts of the company that I haven’t yet experienced.”

Scott Hutchison (Market Intelligence Manager – former EuroTRAIL Graduate Trainee)

“The euroTRAIL programme assisted me in securing a challenging position where I have responsibility to deliver a number of key goals for the long-term strategy of the company. This is an excellent position to further enhance my knowledge and exposure to different facets of the business.”

Gareth Webb (Operational Management Apprentice)

“I was attracted by the ability to learn and earn at the same time, and the variety of roles being offered. The apprenticeship allows you to see and work in all aspects of DB Cargo UK. The best bits for me so far are the practical aspects. I have really enjoyed the shunting, and am enjoying the driver training. I can't wait to get my practical handling hours in.”
