Intercultural skills

ERDB currently has some 214 employees from 32 countries in Abu Dhabi and Mirfa.

This multinational team offers many new opportunities and experiences for everyone involved. Some workflows and meetings may not be handled in the way you are accustomed to.

This is why it is essential to do some intercultural "homework" beforehand to prepare for the different approaches to work, different hierarchy structures and different ways of communicating you may face, so that your transition runs smoothly and you feel comfortable with the different cultures involved.

A good way to start preparing is to watch this video on YouTube (Source: Dr Deborah Swallow).

Ms Christine Tschoepe would also be happy to provide you with further information on how to prepare for new intercultural environments.

Corporate language: English

B1 English skills or higher (see the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or CEFR) are essential for working in this multinational company which has English as its only corporate language.

Not sure how good your English is?

Before you apply, make sure to take our language test, and send us the results with your application. We will provide you with the language test upon request.

If you are below B1, do not hesitate to contact us. We can help you find ways to improve your English skills.

Three-year assignment

We ideally expect all our applicants to be able to work in the UAE for three years.

Deutsche Bahn offers all its employees who are posted abroad fair posting conditions and a guarantee that they can return to a DB position.

Working abroad is also an excellent opportunity to improve your professional and personal skills

Application in English

To apply, please send us the following documents:

  • Detailed CV in English
  • Application form
  • English test (upon request)

Send your application to uae.info@deutschebahn.com.

We will review your application and contact you.

  • Ideally, you should include your preferred area of focus in your CV.
  • Note: Please be aware that the application process will take some time because there are multiple countries and time zones involved.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask the contact persons listed here.

Special information for train drivers

If you are a train driver, please also submit safety documentation and psychometric test results showing that you have the necessary skills and qualifications.

4a. Useful information for your application and interview

Step 1: Submitting your application

Click the above link to the Etihad Rail DB job board to see the positions with start dates in the near or immediate future.

To apply, please send us the following documents:

  • CV in English (with detailed information on your professional experience and education, with the information in each section in chronological order)
  • Application form
  • English test

Click the "Downloads" link on the right hand side of this page to access the forms you will need.

Send your application to uae.info@deutschebahn.com.

We look forward to receiving your application. Should you have any questions on the application process, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Step 2: Telephone or Skype interview in English

If Etihad Rail DB invites you to a virtual interview, you will need to be prepared to have a conversation in English about subject-specific topics relating to the job and your experience.

Make sure to do some research on ERDB, practice your English, and prepare ways to concisely summarise the expertise you have to offer.

Here are some tools and links to help you prepare for the interview:

Step 3: Job offer from ERDB

If your English telephone or Skype interview goes well and you would like to take the job, preparations will begin for your international assignment.

If you haven't already done so, you should let your HR management team and your line manager know about your new position, because this is the point at which the HR people involved will need to get in touch with each other to address all the HR-related details (such as whether your family will come with you, how much you will be paid abroad, when you will be able to start, how overtime will be handled, etc.).

Once ERDB confirms everything, you will receive your offer letter

Length of the application process

It will take some time after your first interview before you are contacted again, since a number of local parties are involved in decisions about candidates.

If you do not hear from us straight away, do not worry – this is normal.

If you are chosen for a specific position, it will usually take some three to six months until everything is ready and you can begin work. In other words, you will have time to organize any personal matters involved.

If you are not chosen for the job, we will be happy to provide you with detailed feedback and discuss areas where you might have room for improvement. There could be another position available the next year that you might like to apply for.

Rest assured that we will address your needs – we help every DB applicant through the entire process. We look forward to receiving your application. .

4b. Useful information about international assignments

DB employees from Germany who are posted to the UAE:

You will discuss your offer letter and any other relevant details with Ms Nami Üpping from HDT 1, DB's international assignment department.

DB employees from other countries who are posted to the UAE:
If you are a DB employee working in a country other than Germany, your contact will be Ms Sehriban Riedl, the global mobility expert from the international assignment project team at V.CH. She will discuss all the relevant details with you and your HR management team.

4c. Useful information about returning from an international assignment

Once you know that you will be returning to Deutsche Bahn soon, we will be available to assist you throughout the entire professional and personal re-integration process.

Deutsche Bahn offers you as a DB employee a guarantee that you can return to the same position you had before your international assignment, or to a similar position.

At least six months before your international assignment ends, we recommend that you start thinking in detail about your goals (professional and/or personal), the experience you can offer, and the kinds of positions at DB you think would be a good fit.

Let us know what positions you would be interested in so that we and your HR management team can best assist you with returning to DB and starting your new job.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We are happy to help.
