Salary: Starting at £12,839 per annum progressing to £21,896 per annum in year 4

Overview of Vacancy
Opportunity for six Engineering Apprentices to join a highly reputable international rail freight operator.
Our Apprenticeship programme runs over four years. The programme is designed to provide on the job training, which will be supported through various qualifications. As one of our Engineering Apprentices you will be championed and mentored by engineering specialists. You will have exposure to our maintenance depots, engineering management & engineering meetings/projects.

The supported qualifications will include;

  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering
  • HNC & HND In Electrical Engineering

Successful completion of the above two qualifications may lead to you being supported through the Bachelor of Engineering.
The training will involve travel between our depots located at Crewe (Cheshire) and Toton (Nottingham) along with offsite training at Derby College.

Person Specification

Age Limit
You must be aged 18; this is to ensure we are compliant with Health & Safety requirements and regulations around shift patterns and working at night for under 18’s. There is no upper age limit.

To be considered for entry to the Apprenticeship programme you must hold a minimum of two of the following qualifications:

  • A Level at Grade A – E
  • AS Level at Grade A - E
  • O Level at Grade A – E
  • NVQ or BTEC Level 2 or above in an Engineering subject

You will also require:

  • GCSE English at Grade A* - C
  • GCSE Mathematics at Grade A* - C
  • GCSE Science at Grade A* - C

Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English may be accepted.

All original certificates must be shown.


Medical Requirements
As part of the selection process you will need to undertake a safety critical medical with our medical provider. The medical will include sight and hearing checks. The Engineering Apprentice role requires a good level of physical fitness. If you have a known medical condition we’ll carry out a risk assessment so that we can, where possible, find a safe system of work for you.


It is really important that you pass the medical examination, for not only your own safety but that of others around you.

If you fail to disclose any medication at the medical this will result in any offer being withdrawn.

We have very high safety standards and we need to know if you have a medical condition or are taking medication that may cause any of the following:
sudden loss of consciousness, awareness or concentration

  • sudden incapacity
  • temporary loss of vision or coordination and balance
  • immobility

Upon successful completion of the four year Apprenticeship we will offer you the role of Engineering Team Member. Although your training location will be Crewe, please be aware that your final job placement could be at one of our other Engineering depots.

Your job placement will be confirmed in Year 4.

Working week
37 hours per week, initial hours will be 8-4 but as the programme progresses you may be required to work at weekends. On completion of the programme you will be expected to work shifts.
